AI's New Voice Mode: Talk Your Family History Onto the Page

If typing is the thing slowing you down, ChatGPT and Claude just gave you a faster way to get your thoughts into typed words.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic released new improved voice modes within two weeks of each other. On July 8, OpenAI released GPT-Live for ChatGPT. It listens and speaks at the same time, so you can interrupt it, trail off, and change your mind mid-sentence. When you ask something hard it hands the work to a stronger model and comes back with a real answer. On July 23, Anthropic put its full lineup of AI models into Claude's voice mode. You now talk to the same model you use at your desk, and you can switch models without leaving the conversation.

What changed in the new voice mode

The old voice feature made you take turns. You talked, AI waited, then AI answered, but often simply summarizing what you said back to you. Not very helpful.

GPT-Live and Claude's voice mode are different. It works in full duplex, which means it can listen and respond in the moment, the way a person does. It murmurs "mhmm" while you talk. It lets you cut in and change direction. When you ask something that needs deeper thinking, it hands the hard part to a stronger model behind the scenes and comes back with the answer.

Everything you say and all of the AI model's responses are saved in the chat and you can export it all to use in your work.

Why speaking is better than typing

Plenty of family historians have the story in their head and no easy way to get it onto the page.

Maybe your hands hurt after twenty minutes at the keyboard. Maybe typing is slow and you lose the thread before you finish the thought. Maybe you simply think better out loud, the way you would telling a cousin about your grandmother at the kitchen table.

Speaking to AI voice mode fixes all of that. You talk, the words appear, and you made progress. Everyone speaks far quicker than they type. A story that took you three sessions to peck out can come pouring out in one.

For anyone who has put off writing because the typing itself felt like a chore, this is the on-ramp.

How to use voice mode to write your ancestor's story

Here's how to access voice mode in ChatGPT and Claude. From the chat screen, tap on the right most icon with the lines on it. You will jump into the voice mode screen as shown below. Once there, just start talking. AI will capture what you say and then respond to you in normal, natural language.

Try this. Open voice mode and say something like:

"I want to tell you about my great-grandmother. Ask me questions about her one at a time so I can talk through her whole life, and keep track of what I say."

Then just talk. Let it interview you. When you mention the farm, it asks where. When you mention the move west, it asks when and why. You answer out loud, and the AI tool captures everything.

When you are done, ask it to organize what you said into a timeline, or a first rough draft you can edit. You walk away with pages, built from your own voice, in the time it took to do the dishes.

You are not trying to produce a finished chronicle by talking. You are getting the raw story out of your head (where it does you no good) and into words you can shape.

One note before you adopt it

Voice is for getting the story and details out, not for working the entire process.

Talk freely to go from facts to draft. AI can clean up the dictation and create the skeleton of the story you want to tell. You can add more details with voice mode, or switch to typing.

The final step before publishing is check and verify every word. Used that way, voice mode is not a shortcut around the work. It is a faster door into it.
