The Shelf Check: The Research You Have Right Now
The Shelf Check is the Chronicle Makers Tool that reads everything you hold on one ancestor at once and tells you what you have.
The Shelf Check™ is a Chronicle Makers Tool for family historians that assists you in looking at everything you hold on one ancestor evaluates what you have. It runs before any new research.
Most family historians do not have a research problem. They have a Full Pantry — folders and files of downloads, a tree, three theories, and a research log they meant to keep updated. The Full Pantry Problem is abundance which feels like scarcity.
What you see in the Shelf Check
Every research project starts in a different state. Some records are in a folder. Some are in a research log. Some are only in your memory. Most of the time, none of it is organized the way you want.
One job that AI is good at is reading files. It can read every record you hold on one ancestor, compare them, and report what it finds.
The Shelf Check reads all of it together. The report tells you what you have, how to organize it, and where your own records do not agree with each other. It is the "before photo" of your research.

What is not in the Shelf Check
There is a belief in family history that you can upload a whole tree as a GEDCOM file and have AI verify it. You get back a report. Items are flagged and the answers sound certain. The issue is nothing in it was checked against what the records actually say, and if research coverage was sound.
The Shelf Check report does not tell you if your research is correct. A verdict needs the records themselves, transcribed, and that comes later. This is why the report carries no confidence labels.
The Shelf Check is also not a score. You run it one time, at the start, on one ancestor to assess what you have at the start of your research project. You do not run it again each time you add records.
What to do next with your report
The report ends with a list of your next actions.
Most people work through the list in one sitting. At the end they have a research log that matches the files in their own folder and are ready to start creating their research plan.
Members post their reports in the Chronicle Makers community and say what came of them. Real folders, real numbers, real first weeks. That is where to see what a Shelf Check looks like in somebody else's hands.
Where it fits in the research process
The Genealogy Research Toolkit™ has a start point and an end point. The Shelf Check™ is the start. The Ancestor Research Inventory is the end. The research happens between them. Two other tools help also: The Research Quality Check tells you if the research holds up. The Soundness Standard tells you when it is finished. Both come later, and on purpose.
When the research is sound, you can write the ancestor's story. The STORI Method is how that gets done.
If you share about using the Shelf Check™, provide the name Shelf Check™ and that it is from Chronicle Makers. Link to this page as its permanent home.
